Working with Water

Working with Water

Coastal cities respond to the threat of rising sea levels with diverse design strategies at multiple scales.

March 2011

As the warmest decade on record drew to a close, representatives from the more than 190 countries attending the United Nations Climate Conference held late last year in Cancun, Mexico, made just halting progress in addressing the root causes of climate change. The conference agreements, although a step forward, set only modest limits on greenhouse-gas emissions. But as the symptoms of a warmer world become more apparent, the design community has begun to consider the consequences of climate change. Looming large among these symptoms is sea-level rise, a dynamic that has the potential to radically change the character of coastal areas throughout the world.
If the weight of the science doesn’t hit home, then consider that 55 percent of private real-estate insurers are now limiting new policies in mid-Atlantic coastal areas, says Wetlands Watch, a Virginia-based conservation organization. One top-10 company will no longer insure properties within one mile of the coast. Also consider that more than 30 U.S. military installations are already facing elevated risk from rising sea levels, according to the Pentagon’s most recent Quadrennial Defense Review, issued in February 2010.
The fluctuating seas
The earth has been warming for thousands of years. This very gradual warming trend took a steep turn upward around the start of the industrial revolution — a phenomenon that many researchers link to escalating carbon dioxide levels. Scientists are finding that the rate of sea-level rise is increasing as well. NASA satellite measurements show that the last decade’s rate of increase is almost double that of the last century. Seas are currently rising about 1⁄8 inch per year.
For an especially flood-prone part of New Orleans, Waggonner & Ball has proposed transforming the streetscape into a parklike environment that would incorporate water as an amenity.

Compartment House / Ario Danar

Constructed Area: 126 sqm
Project year: 2007

Our compartment house is located in Bintaro Jaya 4th sector, South Jakarta-Indonesia, which has many types of house. The type of house that we bought in the year of 2000 was the smallest type, type 36 (building area of 36 square meters and land area of 90 square meters). This house is a standard type.
Consist of a living room, two (2) bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Existing house roof have pitch roof.

front-elevation

In 2003, we renovated the house to restore the original structure of the building to its previous condition. We added a second story, which consists of a kitchen, a dining room and a bedroom. A unique quality of this house is the old building and the new one separated by a void. This void was made not only to ease the construction but also to become an active open space. The wooden deck and the planter (frangipani tree) give a touch of nature.
In 2007, unpredictably, we acquired the site behind our house. The existing type is maissonet type.
coral-garden
In the middle of 2007 we plan to connect the additional building with previous building, with activated the void function again in this house, and become to ordering sequences. But in this case, the voids become the passive open space with coral rock element and bonsai tree. Then we moved the wooden stairs to access the maiden room. We eliminated the wooden floor upstairs to increase the leveling of the ceiling.
The whole concept of the 2 united buildings, the new with the old, to keep every public area become transparent, causes the small areas to have a spacious impression and openly “visible”.

library

This library, located in Surry Hills, Australia, shows how important it is to have the participation of those who will use the space after the construction of a project. The architects from the FJMT office decided that for this project, the community would be participating in several decisions, which resulted in a gorgeous and totally usable building.

The first idea was that community would like to have something beyond a simple library. The construction should be a place where everyone could share some activity. So they managed to host a library, a community center and even a child care for the neighborhood' s children, showing the importance of having activities like these in one place.

And to complete, the architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp put a lot of wisdom in certain choices, such as the use of transparency as a way of inviting the public into the building just as enabling a new way of viewing the neighborhood to those inside. The concern about he materials, to maintain an internal cooling of all spaces make this project a great inspiration to all of us who like architecture.

Furniture Transformer – Boxetti collection

via Design Swan by admin on 5/21/10

Boxetti collection is one of the most fancy furniture designs I’ve ever seen. It is driven by three basic design principles – functionality, advanced technologies and contemporary aesthetics of minimalism. Each of Boxetti modules is designed to achieve maximum efficiency of particular demands for functionality and suitability. The capability of the modules to be transformed into compactly solid blocks is essential for the design concept in order to obtain an unobstructed and comfortable space – free of uselessness.

Furniture Transformer - Boxetti collection

1. BOXETTI_PRIVATE – bedroom module

Boxetti Private contains the set of basic bedroom functions –a double bed, night stand and a wardrobe. The foldaway bed platform is automatically lifted by a remote control, together with a built-in night stand. The unit is equipped with a spotlight and an ambience lighting fixture above the headboard. The integrated wardrobe consists of six sections including shelves, drawers and a clothes rail.

2. BOXETTI_PRACTICE – workspace module

BOXETTI_PRACTICE has a manual foldaway desk top with a block of drawers, a bookshelves system and a upholstered chill-out niche for a more relaxed practice, equipped with a smaller adjustable desk top.

library

This kind of materials combination is often a great choice and almost always delivers beautiful result: wood, bricks and glass. Of course that the architects talent has a considerable part on the projects result, but here we have nothing to say. Archoffice did a great job on the Birkenhead Library and Civic Centre, at New Zealand.

The transparency is another element that was very wisely explored in this building. The intention was to allow natural light to come inside all rooms, and they did that by using glass in all the facades and also having a skylight in the center of the library. At the indoors we notice the attention with details common at the projects from Archoffice, using textures, few colors and vertical elements that contrasts with the horizontal line of the building. A sensational place for the piece it provides for a good reading and for the great architectural elements.
